Help remove invasive trees from the WI Wood - Histon & Impington Green Spaces

Help remove invasive trees from the WI Wood - Histon & Impington Green Spaces

The WI Wood – also known as Histon Wood – sits beside the Busway opposite Manor Field and the Histon & Impington Community Orchard.

In recent years this woodland has been invaded by evergreen oaks, an alien species: for more information see here.

The Parish Council have been granted permission by Cambridgeshire County Council (who own the wood) to remove these alien oaks.

There are several hundred saplings to remove! We are inviting volunteers to come and assist on:

  • Saturday 16th January 2027, 10:30am to 12:30pm

  • Saturday 6th February 2027 10:30am to 12:30pm

Please meet beside the Busway access track by the entrance to the wood near the stables at the public footpath crossing from the St Audrey's Close.

Please wear suitable footwear and clothes and bring work gloves. We hope many of the saplings can be pulled out by hand, but some digging may be needed – so spades, trowels and forks might be useful.

Children are welcome where under the supervision and responsibility of a parent or carer but are not covered by the volunteers insurance for this activity.

The work is being done under the auspices of the Parish Council and is being supported by Histon & Impington Green Spaces.

All are welcome

It is not necessary to register in advance but it will help with our planning if you can drop a line to sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online to say you hope to join.

Help remove old plastic tree guards from Centenary Wood

Centenary Wood

Following a successful evening forage in June picking up the old, brittle plastic tree guards which are littering these woods, Sustainable Oakington & Westick are planning another session on Saturday 15th August, 10–11.30am.

They will meet by the entrance to Centenary Wood. Histon and Impington residents please note that the meeting point is on the Oakington side of the Wood (see https://maps.app.goo.gl/sGSXTvKAd5HFyQw27).

They recommend wearing old clothes and gloves (the task can include crouching/crawling under trees) and bringing a carrier bag and maybe a kneeler.

Everyone is welcome to come along and join in, including supervised children.

Tree Walk at Croft Close Nature Reserve

An evening stroll around the trees of the Croft Close Nature Reserve: ancient trees and saplings, common trees and exotic species. How did the trees spring up on this formerly bare field? What other wildlife comes with them? The walk leader will be Daphne Fisher, one of the founder members of Histon & Impington Green Spaces, who is qualified in Forestry.

Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

We start at the Croft Close entrance to the Set-aside (CB24 9HU).

Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online . Places are limited to avoid disturbing the nesting birds.

There is no charge for the walk but participants will be invited to donate to Histon & Impington Green Spaces (in cash on the day, or via the website).

Village BioBlitz

Prepare to be astonished!

We have joined forces with Histon & Impington Community Orchard to start Feast Week with a nature extravaganza- Histon & Impington BioBlitz. You can find full details of the event here.

FREE all-day drop-in event incorporating the Orchard Breakfast

Nature sets the timetable! From dawn (almost) to dusk local experts will be hunting for animals and plants, and anyone – young or old - can join them.

St Audrey’s Close Community Centre will be the BioBlitz ”hub” from 10:30-16:30; with a focus on the Community Orchard in the morning from 9am including the traditional breakfast (serving 10:30-12:00).

There will be a nature puzzle trail between the two sites.

Find out what nature stalls are coming here.

See the programme of TIMED ACTIVITIES here.

Discover the amazing variety of animals and plants living right on your doorstep.

Regrettably, there is no car parking provision. Please come dressed for the weather.

This event is supported by the Histon Beer Festival.

* "Bio" means "life" and "Blitz" means "to do something quickly and intensively"; a BioBlitz is a quick and fun way to create a snapshot of the variety of life that can be found in an area.

Flora Survey at Long Meadow, Park Lane

Join one of our regular flora surveys at Long Meadow. Whether recently started identifying plants or having a lifelong interest, all are welcome to come and help monitor the 150 or so flora species found at the Meadow.

You don’t need to bring anything other than, perhaps, something to kneel on and suitable clothing. But if you have a wildflower or grass identification guide, bring it along.

If you are interested in coming along, please let us know in advance at sitemangers@abbeyfields.online to check if there are available places. (Group size is limited by equipment availability!).

We meet beside the fence at the village end of Long Meadow.

Monthly summer work parties at Long Meadow

Why not join one of our regular work parties (third Tuesday of the month). These work parties will focus on the Park Lane hedge, watering and weeding the two sections of young hedge saplings. We will also be tending the young tree saplings in the avenue and the commemorative oak.

We start by the fence at the village end of Long Meadow.

Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online . This allows us to let you know if the work party has to be cancelled, and also to ask you, if you can, to bring specific tools, watering can, etc to suit the planned tasks.

Please come dressed for the weather, with stout footwear, sun hat and gloves. Secateurs will always be handy. Suntan lotion and some water are also a good idea if it is a hot day.

Monthly summer work parties at Croft Close Nature Reserve

Monthly summer work parties at Croft Close Nature Reserve

Why not join one of our regular work parties (second Saturday of the month except June*). To minimise disturbance to wildlife, these light-duty work parties will concentrate on controlling young brambles emerging in the grassy areas. We will keep clear of potential nest sites and avoid dwelling long in any location.

We start at the Croft Close entrance to the Nature Reserve.

Please register in advance by emailing sitemanagers@abbeyfields.online . This allows us to let you know if the work party has to be cancelled OR transferred to Long Meadow, and also to ask you, if you can, to bring specific tools to suit the planned tasks.

Please come dressed for the weather, with stout footwear, sun hat and gloves. Secateurs will always be handy. Suntan lotion and some water are also a good idea if it is a hot day.

* First Saturday in June to avoid clashing with Open Gardens 2026
