BioBlitz a hot success!
With 400 species of flora and fauna recorded on a hot sunny day, with the joy on the faces of the many participants, with volunteers leaving in a cheery mood after a long day in challenging weather – this was undoubtably a highly successful day.
What were the big draws? An interesting array of species at the bird ringing demonstration. A host of moths – some happy to pose on a child’s nose to their great delight. The “worm club”; what better way to spend a morning than to explore what lives in the luxury of a compost heap? Or was it see how a butterfly puts out its tongue when prompted by an expert?
Around 120 flowering plants and trees were found – including five species of elm, one of Cambridgeshire’s specialities. We had a moth last recorded in Cambridgeshire in 2020 and whilst Common Pipistrelle was the only bat species noted for certain, they nevertheless gave a good display (both bat detectors and thermal imaging monoscopes adding to the experience).
